In the past I have had many questions, thoughts and confusions around hearing God's voice. I used to get really upset not knowing what God's voice sounded like, not knowing whether I was just listening to my own voice or even the enemies lies. I used to be fearful of God speaking to me and shut down in ministry times begging God not to speak to me because I thought he may tell me to do something I couldn't do.
Looking back I have discovered some of the things that have helped me learn to hear God's voice more clearly.
- I began to learn about God's love for me and His character in my Mii group as I got to know God and was known by other people who are now my friends. I learnt that God did not wish to bring me fear or confusion. He was completely trustworthy and wanted to bless others through me.
- Practise! When you know someone really well you can speak to them on the phone and they don't have to explain who they are - you recognise their voice because you have heard it so much. Well, it's a bit like that with God - practise listening to God, even if it's just walking down the street praying for people you pass by.
Last week I prayed for someone in ministry time and I felt God gave me a word for them - it was an encouraging loving word, (which is how God always works), but I still was doubtful that it was God. I felt God urge me to say it and the person said it was the answer from God to a question they had asked him that day! It blessed the person but also encouraged me.
My challenge to you is to start practising hearing God's voice - He wants to talk to us! It isn't as scary as you think...
